Welcome to Darcy's Masterpieces

My goal for my graded unit is to give a solid description on what i have achieve throughout the academic year. Im looking to improve in a studio setting, knowledge of daws and mixing and working alongside other people. Some experience I have outside would be things such as doing music throughout high school, being a pianist and uploading personal projects/ music covers on social media.

The experience of being a musician outside of college has allowed me to work on things much easier, such as my synthesis and sampling project, audio for multimedia project and it really helped with recording and mixing. Since I have experience of doing covers in my own time, it made recording and mixing not so stressful and allowed for a really nice flow throughout the piece I chose.

The experience I have achieved throughout college such as using DAW’s and being in a studio environment has also been a blessing. I know ableton like the back of my hand and I have learned to use protools efficiently. This has helped me create lots of projects at home and has helped me continue with this passion. Working in the studio helped also, this is due to the fact that I would be in a group so it helped me overcome social anxiety and helped me gain skills with using mixing desks. Ive also learned various micing techniques and how to mic up certain instruments such as a full drum kit, vocals, acoustic and electric guitars ect

My featured artefacts

Here are 3 of my best projects throughout the academic year, demonstrating a diverse range of audio production skills and creative approaches. Each piece reflects my dedication and passion to all things musical.

Artefact one: [[recording and mixing]]

We chose to do the song red swan from attack on titan as its full of instrumentation and effects. Our instrumentation of choice ended up being piano, drums, strings, choir, electric guitar and vocals. We began recording with piano as I know the song by heart and it gave us a strong start to the project. The EMS room is what we chose as the song is so keyboard heavy. We picked out our mics and did a standard 2 overheads, snare, kick, floor tom and talk back setup to get our drums done by  our classmate. Later we booked a studio for after college and used an AKG414 to record our vocals recorded strings on the roland and also recorded a guitar sound on it too, since we our guitarist couldn’t do it for us. For my mix i levelled my channels appropriately and began adding effects. I made an aux track for the drum reverb, the reverb on the drums ended up making all the difference in my final mix. i added reverb on piano vocals and drums only, as the other sounds i chose already sounded good just from some automation. i used a mix of the "space" reverb on the instruments and i used a bit of Dverb on the vocals.

Artefact two: [[synthesis and sampling]]

for this project i made 8 synths and a sample instrument incorporating them in an original piece of music. Jack took in his instrument and we recorded it in multiple pitches, I then put it into a simpler and added effects to have my sound. I began creating my track with a melody and a chord progression with my synths to my liking. I chose various reverbs and delays and added them to different tracks until I found something that I thought sounded good. https://youtu.be/rv4VElV2HN8

Artefact three: [[audio for multimedia]]

For my final artefact i chose my AFMM clip. i chose the opening sequence of luigis mansion 2. it has a lot of sound design and tons of effects so i thought to use it as my piece of work. i began making the clip by analysing all the sounds i can and finding them on soundQ. i had a classmate voice ant the ghosts for me and i also done a couple of my own recordings of sounds. i also used synthesis for sounds like the ghosts eyes dilating and tv static. one i had all the sounds placed down i ended up adding lots of effects and pitching many of the sounds. for the ghosts i opted to use a vocoder as it makes a human voice sound otherworldly. i ended up having over 50 tracks so i made sure i had plenty of sounds during this creation. i showed the tracks in the video above as there would be too many screenshots to show here.

My approach to sound

I have a huge interest in producing electronic music and making my own unique sounds through synthesis. I aim to create unique sounds/timbre that you typically wouldn’t hear others use. My goal for this path is to make an audience and gain recognition through my music. When it comes to music, I can safely say my dedication is my strong point. From making my own tracks, working in team environments and even playing my instruments at home I always make sure to dedicate my time into making sure everything is polished and sounds amazing. I don’t like submitting/publishing anything that I feel could be better and I always make sure to make the most of my time perfecting what I love doing. I especially love putting my time into learning and improving my skills for music.
